The Fitbit Charge is the last batch Fitness Tracker of 2014 and offers itself as a motivational tool to melt the pounds of Christmas goose, cookies and marzipan before the holidays.

The Fitbit Charge is the “entry level” among the three new fitness trackers from Fitbit and virtually the successor to the Fitbit Flex . While the app remains the same, there are some changes in the hardware. For example, the technique is permanently installed in the armband and can not be like removing the previous model. Also new is the display that shows not only the time, but every time you supplied with a current scoreboard.

Comfortable bracelet in new material

The bracelet of the Fitbit Charge is 21 millimeters wide and is available in two different sizes to choose from. I wear the larger version. The closure consists of surgical stainless steel. It offers a total of seven different positions, what makes sense, because the bracelet should fit not too tight or too loose.

As always a finger between the strap and wrist should be the optimal fit, the Fitbit Charge can after a little practice close easily and reopen it. Ensure that it occurs to me unnoticed by the wrist, but I’m not sure. After a week, I find that the Fitbit Charge is convenient to carry and in everyday life does not bother as a wristwatch. Quite so flat and inconspicuous as the Misfit Shine or the Mi band of Xiaomi.

In the US, Fitbit had already brought the Fitbit Charge as Fitbit Force in the retail trade, but the sale had to stop in the spring due to skin irritation for many users . The Fitbit Charge is the new edition with a different material. The elastomer plastic band used has proven itself according to the manufacturer already in many sports watches and after ten days, I can not see any redness of my skin. It is approved!

Anyone who has taken out the Fitbit Flex the sensor from the bracelet and stored elsewhere or fixed, will not be satisfied with the Fitbit Charge. The technique is permanently installed in the bracelet. It does not bother me, because I have found no better place for a Fitness Tracker than the wrist. And then again, sometimes the ankle would be an opportunity. But for that I would need a larger bracelet that hardly could be called a smart band.

OLED display reveals the number and names of callers

I may not get along well with fitness trackers without display, the only signal with LED lights, is how close I came to my destination for the day already. But the Fitbit Charge makes it clear that a few more details would not be harmful to experience but helpful and make the constant communication with the smartphone superfluous and so, in effect, can also extend the battery life of both devices.

The display shows you the time and in each case for the current day, the steps taken, distance traveled and calories burned. To enable or to scroll through the values in the display, you have to press the button on the side of the housing.

In the settings of the Fitbit app you can change individual or completely hide the order of the values. For the digital clock are four different “dials” to choose from. The backlit display is easy to read and well in the dark. Tapping two times on the armband, it will display the selected value in the app, without having to press the button on the page.

Very handy I find a new function of Fitbit Charge: It’s called “caller ID” which means nothing else than that the bracelet of an incoming call on your smartphone informed – including the name of the caller if he is in your address book. My smartphone is usually set to silent and when I put it on the desk in the office or at home on the kitchen table or hanging from the wall outlet, I do not get every call with it, because I often forget the ringtone in addition to the vibration again, according to ask. As a note the display at the wrist is just right.

How Accurate is the Fitbit Charge?

After I recently checked out on their accuracy several Fitness Tracker was, of course, I must also test how accurately the Fitbit Charge. The result looks good. Instead of 1000 counted by hand steps he displays in 1013. An error rate of 1.3 percent, much is still within the tolerance range and a better result than the Fitbit Flex is as well as in the overall consideration for second place behind the Jawbone Up24 enough.

In vertical tracking the Fitbit Charge, however, appears to be significantly more generous than what I lost in the step count. So I have today and tomorrow, for example, gone three floors down, but the fitness tracker shows me already six stories passed. Significantly more plausible seems to me, however, the measured sleep times, which automatically is measured by the Fitbit Charge. I need to sleep at bedtime for logging neither in nor off when standing up.

The synchronization of the data is done with the app on your smartphone via Bluetooth or a USB Ant+ connector in your computer directly to the online portal of Fitbit. In the test, the data synchronization via Bluetooth did not work properly. Even removing other Bluetooth devices brought not always a relief, so that the error but could be in the hardware or the software of the batch. But I could not identify the cause.

Annoying, but unfortunately in fitness trackers currently, is still common that I have to also have to charge the Fitbit Charge with its own USB cable and it can not use the micro USB cable from my smartphone. But the values displayed by Fitbit battery life of at least seven days it held out easily.

After a week, the battery was charged about half, according to the Fitbit app. But I had also disabled synchronization of the data in the background and then charged a maximum of once a day on the phone. After ten days, the Charge was dismissed by a flashing symbol on his display to indicate that its battery is running low.

Motivating app with many features

I like the Fitbit app. It is the same as for the Fitbit Flex or other older pedometers from the manufacturer. However, the application can only be connected with One activity tracker at the time. The design is clean, clear and chic. On the dashboard, all important data can be seen directly.

If you click it, you get the view over the last few days and also for each individual day. It does not include the smart balance of Fitbit on its own, but can enter the daily weight of hand. This can be obtained by using the Fitbit Aria scale uploaded directly via WiFi. Also still manually enter the information on the amount of water drunk and food consumed – a quick search in the Food Database is here at least.

In addition, you can befriend you with other Fitbit users and compete with them. Four different types of competitions are available where you can outdo your friends.
